Our democracy must be not only the envy of the world but the engine of our own renewal.

奥巴马号召开启一个具有责任感的新时代, "What is required of us now is a new era of responsibility - a recognition, on the part of every American, that we have duties to ourselves, our nation, and the world, duties that we do not grudgingly accept but rather seize grandly, firm in the knowledge that there is nothing so satisfying to the spirit, so defining of our character, than giving our all to a difficult task. This is the price and promise of citizenship."

Go Hawks!

The first day of 2009, we went to Tampa, FL for the Outback Bowl Game, a matchup between Iowa Hawkeye and South Carolina Gamecocks. This is my first ever New Year's Day American College football bowl game.

We left Orlando around 7:00 am in the morning, arrived at Raymond James Stadium in Tampa just before 9:00 am. Since I left Iowa about two years ago, I've never seen so many Hawkeye fans, tens of thousands of them, old and young, in black and gold, showing our school pride. All of a sudden, I was surrounded by a sea of Hawkeye fans. That makes me feel so overwhelmed.  It's very obvious that the Hawkeye fans dominate the morning tailgating outside of the stadium, they were drinking, chatting, playing, or just hanging out with friends and family. I felt a strong bond with them, although we might not know each other, we are all Iowa Hawkeye, ---- we bleed black and gold. Iowa Hawkeye fans usually greet each other with "go hawks!". Many people travel a long distance coming to this bowl game. The old couple sitting next to us drove all the way from Waterloo, IA. It's more fun watching game with people in a stadium than with a small group of people in front of a TV set. People scream, shot, sing, dance, raise hands to make waves and slap high fives together.

The result is even greater. That makes the trip worth it. Iowa Hawkeye 31, USC 10.

After the bowl game, I went to Clearwater beach, enjoyed the beautiful sunset on the golf of Mexico. We also met with old friend Xueyan for dinner there.

O Holy Night

Christams Eve, we spent the night at the Northland Church in Longwood for a Christmas service and concert. This is a gigantic non-denominational church, with an auditorium-like church hall which can hold several thousand attendees at one time. The Service starts at 7:00 pm, but we were told that we need to get there at least half hour before it starts. Volunteers stood at the intersections and in the doorways greeting people, Merry Christmas, Merry Christmas! People greet each other with joy and happiness.

For Christian, who profess the Christian faith all over the world, Christmas is the time of the year to celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ, the one they regard as their redeemer and Messiah. That's why everyone rejoice and they have reason to feel merrier tonight. At the service, we were asked to raise our hands and shake hands and say merry Christmas to people sitting around us. That's such a joyful time, people, known or unknown, became one in Jesus Christ.

Another memorable moment, was when all lights were out, in the darkness, the chorus and the congregation were singing, O Holy Night, everyone with a candle in hand. All of a sudden, the candles were lit, one after another, hundreds, thousands. Every one was holding a candle, waving and singing. That was a powerful scene, glistening candlelight like stars in the night sky, shining and overcoming the darkness.

O Holy Night
Christmas Carol Lyrics

O Holy night, the stars are brightly shining.
It is the night of our dear Saviour's birth.
Long lay the world in sin and error pining,
Till he appeared and the soul felt its worth.
A thrill of hope the weary world rejoices,
For yonder breaks a new and glorious morn.
Fall on your knees! Oh hear the angel voices!
Oh night divine! Oh night when Christ was born!
Oh night divine! Oh night! Oh night divine!

Chains shall he break for the slave is our brother,
and in his name all oppression shall cease.
Sweet hymns of joy in grateful chorus raise we;
Let all within us praise his holy name.
Christ is the lord, that ever, ever praise we.
Noel! Noel! Oh night;oh night divine!
Noel! Noel! Oh night; oh night divine!
Noel! Noel! Oh night; oh night divine!
